SST メソッドのメイン英語教材「Tom And Alice in Japan」では、日本に住んでいるトム(8歳/アメリカ出身)とアリス(6歳/カナダ出身)という男の子と女の子を主人公にして2人のエピソード(出来 事)を中心に談話の形にしてまとめました。エピソードとは生活場面の中で起こった「ちょっとした話」のことです。こういうエピソード的な話は長期記憶とし て頭に残りやすいのです。談話とは文より長い文連続の発話のこと。普通、物語や対話などの形をとります。

Two of Tom's classmates are watching him. The one in back is frowning. He does not think Tom should be reading a comic book. The one wearing glasses next to Tom looks surprised. She is shocked at Tom's behavior. Do you think Tom cares? I doubt it.

1. Making introductions
Alice is a Canadian girl.
She comes from Canada.
Alice is eight years old.
Tom is an American boy.
He comes from the United States.
He is ten years old.
Alice and Tom live near Kobe, now.
They are both learning Japanese, but when they meet they speak English.
Alice: Hello, I'm Alice from
Canada.
Tom: Hi, I'm Tom from America.
Alice: I speak English and
some Japanese.
Tom: So do I.
2. Eating lunch
Tom eats an American lunch.
He likes soup and sandwiches.
He eats peanut butter and jelly sandwiches are his favorite.
He usually drinks cola with lunch.
Alice likes an American lunch, too.
She usually eats around 12.
She eats hot dogs and hamburgers.
She drinks milk with lunch.
Both Tom and Alice want to be healthy,
so they also drink lots of milk.
Tom: What do you eat for breakfast?
Alice: I eat rice and miso soup.
Tom: Do you drink coffee?
Alice: No. I drink milk.
3. Club activities
Tom likes sports.
In America he was interested in football.
But his school does not have an American football club.
Japanese like soccer.
So Tom joined the soccer club.
He plays soccer after school.
Tom is a striker!
He often practices with the team goalkeeper.
Tom even has his name on his jersey.
Alice: Do you like sports ?
Tom: Yes, I do.
Alice: I like swimming.
Tom: I play soccer.
4. Attending school
Alice goes to a Japanese school.
She wears a uniform to school.
She carries her books in her backpack,
just like all of her Japanese classmates.
Sometimes she has to go to school on Saturdays.
She takes an English class at school.
Tom goes to an international school.
He does not have class on Saturdays.
But sometimes he has soccer practice that day.
He takes a Japanese language course.
Tom: What do you do on
Saturday?
Alice: I go to school.
Tom: That's too bad.
Alice: I'd rather play too.
5. Studying in class
Tom is not a serious student.
He often forgets his textbook.
His friends study hard,
but Tom sometimes reads a comic book in class.
Alice is more serious than Tom.
She studies hard.
Her hardest class is Japanese.
She never forgets her textbooks.
She only reads comic books at home.
Alice: Do you sleep in class ?
Tom: No. Never.
Alice: Oh, so you study hard ?
Tom: No. I read a comic book.
6. Writing friends
Alice comes from Toronto, in Canada.
In winter, Toronto is very cold.
It snows there a lot.
Alice and her friends used to make snowmen.
Alice misses her friends a lot.
She often writes them letters, especially in winter.
Tom comes from Seattle, in America.
It does not snow much there.
Tom misses his friends,
but he never writes them letters.
Tom: Do you call your friends ?
Alice: No, I don't.
Tom: What do you do ?
Alice: I write letters.
7. Attending a wedding
This year Tom's teacher got married.
She invited all her students to her wedding.
She was a beautiful Japanese bride.
Tom went to the wedding, too.
He got dressed up in a suit and tie.
He thought his teacher was beautiful.
But he did not think the flowers were real.
So he touched one.
Alice wants to grow up to be a beautiful bride, too.
Alice: What are you doing ?
Tom: I'm touching a flower.
Alice: But why ?
Tom: To see if it is real.
8. Keeping a pet
Alice wanted a pet.
It is hard to keep a dog or cat in Japan.
So her Mom and Dad said she could not have a regular pet.
Alice wanted a small animal for a pet.
She wanted a frog!
One day, it was raining.
Alice put on her rain coat and boots.
She went to a pond.
She caught a frog there.
And she took him home.
Tom: I love my dog.
Alice: I want a pet too.
Tom: How can you get one ?
Alice: Well, I can catch a frog.
9. Going to a festival
Tom likes new things.
In summer he went to a Japanese festival.
He dressed up like a traditional Japanese boy.
He put on tabi.
He wore a happi coat.
He even wore a Japanese head band.
Tom and his soccer friends joined the tug of war.
They pulled the rope hard.
But they lost.
Alice: What will you do at the festival ?
Tom: I'll pull a rope.
Alice: Good luck. I'll pull a cart.
Tom: Good luck.
10. Helping with the housework
Alice helps around the house
She helps her Mother in the kitchen.
She wears an apron.
She dries dishes.
She sets the table.
But there is a problem.
Alice sometimes drops a glass!
Tom does not help much at home.
He is busy with soccer.
And with reading comic books!
Tom: Do you wash the dishes ?
Alice: No, never.
Tom: Why not?
Alice: Sometimes I drop a glass.
11. Going to the Amusement Park
Tom is an active boy.
He likes sports and festivals.
He also likes games.
One day he went to the amusement park.
First he rode on the roller coaster.
Then he put on a helmet,
and drove a bumper car.
Tom had fun running into other cars.
Alice: Let's go to the amusement park.
Tom: Good idea.
Alice: I'll ride a roller coaster.
Tom: I'll drive a car.
12. Holding a cat
Alice likes animals.
She now has a pet frog.
One day she found a stray cat.
She picked him up.
Alice loved to carry him around.
She met Tom in the city.
He asked what Alice was carrying.
At first, Alice would not tell him.
She knows not all animals like Tom!
Tom: What are you holding ?
Alice: Can't you guess ?
Tom: No, I give up.
Alice: I'm holding a cat.
13. Playing in the park
Tom likes to play outside.
In the summer he often goes to the park.
It is hot so he wears shorts and t-shirts.
He usually wears shoes and socks, too.
One day he was playing in the park.
A strange dog attacked him.
The dog barked at Tom.
He tried to bite him.
Tom was afraid.
He climbed a tree to escape.
He lost his shoes and socks!
Tom hates mean animals.
Alice: Look at that dog.
Tom: Oh, here it comes.
Alice: Run away!
Tom: Climb a tree.
14. Riding a bicycle
Alice has a bicycle.
She rides it to school everyday.
She carries her school bag and tennis racket on her bicycle rack.
Tom doesn't have a bicycle.
He has to walk to school.
He carries his school books in his backpack.
He carries his comic books there, too.
Alice arrives at school quickly.
It takes Tom much longer to walk.
Tom: How do you get to school?
Alice: I ride a bicycle.
Tom: I walk.
Alice: Don't you have a bicycle ?
15. Washing dishes
One day Alice came to visit Tom.
They were thirsty.
Tom got fruit juice out of the ice box.
But he couldn't find any clean glasses.
There were a lot of dirty glasses in the sink.
Tom decided to wash them.
First, he turned on the hot water.
Then he poured in some soap.
Finally, he got a brush and washed all the dirty glasses.
Tom does not usually wash the dishes.
But he didn't want to drink out of the bottle with Alice watching!
Alice: Do you want a drink ?
Tom: Sure.
Alice: Oh, the glasses are dirty.
Tom: I'll wash a cup.
16. Going on a picnic
One day in the fall Tom and Alice went on a picnic.
Alice made lunch.
She put it in a heavy bag.
The sun was shining, but it was windy.
Leaves were blowing in the wind.
Tom thought it might rain.
So he brought an umbrella.
Alice had to carry the heavy bag.
Tom wanted to eat.
But he didn't want to carry the heavy bag.
Tom: Let's go on a picnic.
Alice: Good idea.
Tom: I'll carry the umbrella.
Alice: I'll carry the bag.
17. Putting on a cap
One afternoon, Tom was playing baseball.
He loves team sports.
He plays soccer and baseball.
It started to rain.
Alice had an umbrella.
She offered it to Tom.
Tom put on his baseball cap instead.
You can't play baseball holding an umbrella.
Alice: It's raining.
Tom: That's OK.
Alice: Here use my umbrella.
Tom: No, thanks. I'll put on a cap.
18. Doing the laundry
Alice helps around the house.
She helps in the kitchen.
She also helps with the laundry.
Her job is to fold the clean clothes.
Today she was folding towels.
She took a fresh towel from the pile on her left.
She folded it.
Then she put it on top of the pile on her right.
Tom doesn't help with the laundry.
But he does clean the bathroom.
Tom: Do you help at home ?
Alice: Yes.
Tom: I clean the bathroom.
Alice: I fold the towels.
19. Playing baseball
Tom is a good baseball player.
He likes to pitch.
He throws fastballs and breaking balls.
He thinks he is a great pitcher.
One day Alice wanted to play, too.
She wanted to bat.
Tom hates to lose.
So he threw Alice a trick pitch.
Alice struck out.
She is not very good yet at baseball.
Alice: Let's play baseball.
Tom: I'll throw the ball.
Alice: I'll bat.
Tom: You'll strike out.
20. Talking to a baby
Alice is very friendly.
She is also very talkative.
She wants to talk to everybody.
That is why she is learning Japanese.
Once she saw a baby.
The baby was crawling on the floor.
He was chewing on a pacifier.
The baby was too young to speak yet.
Alice talked to him anyway.
Babies can't talk, but they can listen!
Tom: How do you practice Japanese ?
Alice: I talk to a baby.
Tom: Babies can't talk.
Alice: But they can listen.
21. Eating fastfood
Alice and Tom sometimes go out for lunch.
They like fast food.
All kids like fast food, don't they?
Today they went to a fast food restaurant.
Tom got his food first.
He ordered a hamburger.
Alice wanted something lighter.
She ordered French fries.
Tom is not a gentleman.
He ate his hamburger before Alice could even sit down!
Alice: I'm hungry.
Tom: What will you eat ?
Alice: I'll eat French tries.
Tom: I'll eat a hamburger.
22. Making a salad
Tom and Alice don't always eat fast food.
They like healthier food, too.
Sometimes they make a salad.
Tom washes the vegetables.
He carefully washes the cabbage, carrots, cucumbers, and onions.
Alice then cuts them up for salad.
She is very careful with her knife.
She puts the vegetables altogether in a bowl.
Then she adds salt and pepper.
Tom: Let's make salad.
Alice: You wash the vegetables.
Tom: And you ?
Alice: I'll cut a tomato.
23. Going to a party at Tom's house.
When there is a party,
Alice and Tom get dressed up.
Alice always wears a dress.
She wears clean knee socks,
and puts a ribbon in her hair.
And she tries to bring a present.
Tom dresses up too.
He wears a suit with short pants.
And he puts on a bow tie.
When there is a party, he even opens the door for Alice!
Alice: Hello, it's Alice.
Tom: Wait a minute. I'll open the door.
Alice: These are for you.
Tom: Oh, thank you very much.
24. Studying together
In the evening, sometimes Tom and Alice study together.
Alice brings her dictionary.
She sits on a chair.
She studies at the desk.
Tom sits on the floor.
He mostly studies his comic books.
At home, Alice sleeps on the floor (in futon).
Tom sleeps in his bed.
Tom: I sleep on the floor.
Alice: I sleep in bed.
Tom: I sit on the floor.
Alice: I sit on a chair.
25. Buying a cola
Tom and Alice play outside.
They have fun.
But they get thirsty.
Alice always brings money for a cola.
It tastes so good.
Tom never brings any money.
He spends all his money on comic books.
So he never gets to drink a cola.
All he can do is kick an empty can.
Alice: I' m thirsty.
Tom: I don't have money.
Alice: I'll buy a cola.
Tom: I'll kick the can.
26. Camping in the mountains
Tom and Alice like to be outside.
They like to camp in the mountains.
They bring a tent for sleeping.
At night the stars and moon are beautiful.
But it gets cold.
So they make a fire.
Alice breaks the sticks for the fire.
Tom lights it with his matches.
Camping is fun.
Tom: I am cold.
Alice: Let's make a fire.
Tom: I'll get some matches.
Alice: I'll break some sticks.
27. Running to the toilet
Tom and Alice were at a party.
They were dressed up, of course.
They ate a lot at the party.
The food was great.
They were having a good time.
But suddenly, Tom had a problem.
He didn't feel so good.
His stomach started to bother him.
Alice was worried.
Because Tom had to run to the toilet.
Alice: This taste great.
Tom: I don' t feel good.
Alice: I want more.
Tom: I have to run to the toilet.
28. Taking gym class
Tom and Alice both like gym.
Sometimes their schools have class together.
In the summer, they practice track and field.
They put on their gym clothes and go out to the sports field.
Alice is good at the high jump.
Tom is good at soccer and baseball.
But he can't jump so high.
So he sets the bar for Alice.
Tom: Can you jump over this?
Alice: No, it is too high.
Tom: I'll lower it.
Alice: Now I can jump over the bar.
29. Going to swimming class
Tom's school has an Olympic swimming pool.
It is an outdoor pool.
It is just in front of the gym.
In the summer, Tom has gym class in the pool.
He is learning how to swim.
He can't do the crawl or butterfly yet.
He can only do the dog paddle.
But it is fun anyway.
Alice would rather swim in the ocean.
Alice: Do you like to swim?
Tom: Sure. I swim often.
Alice: I swim in the ocean.
Tom: I swim in the pool.
30. Making a snowman
Alice loves the winter.
She likes to put on her scarf, gloves, and boots.
She likes to walk on the snow.
But there is not much snow in Kobe.
So every Christmas vacation, Alice goes back to Canada with her family.
She makes a snowman in her backyard.
She uses coal for the eyes, a stick for the mouth, and a carrot for the nose.
Tom doesn't like the cold so much, but Alice loves it.
When it snows near Kobe, Alice always calls Tom.
Tom: It's snowing.
Alice: Hurray!
Tom: It's beautiful.
Alice: Yes, let's walk on the snow.
31. Visiting a friend in the hospital
Tom and Alice have a friend.
His name is Jiro.
Jiro had an accident.
He fell off his bicycle.
He had to stay in the hospital for a week.
So Tom and Alice went to visit him.
They brought him flowers.
Jiro likes comic books better.
And they got dressed up.
It wasn't a party, but they wanted to cheer Jiro up!
Alice: Let's go in.
Tom: Wait.
Alice: What's wrong ?
Tom: First, I'll knock on the door.
32. Getting mad
Tom came to visit Alice.
It was snack time, so Alice made mixed juice.
She cut up lemons.
She even put cherries and straws in their drinks.
But Alice dropped the glasses. (AGAIN)!
She made a mess.
Tom got juice all over his shirt.
Alice wiped the table.
But Tom was still mad.
He should try to be a better guest.
Tom: Hey, watch out.
Alice: Oh, I spilled it.
Tom: Look at this mess.
Alice: Sorry. I'll wipe the table.
