SSTメソッドとは

英語教育の革新を図るSSTメソッド!

           What is SST?

SST stands for Sound Shower Technique.Img042
SST is based on the scientific fact that we learn language by understanding messages. The more we listen and understand, the more we learn. This is the same for all languages, the mother tongue and foreign languages (English in Japan).

At Manebi we shower our young learners with English sounds, but always of course in context. Most of our context comes from stories featuring Tom & Alice, young foreigners living in Japan. They visit Japan, Animal Land, and Working People. As the learners follow the adventures of Tom & Alice (presented in narration, monologue, scene and dialog) the learners naturally learn natural English. All the stories are recorded on tape/CD, professionally done by native English speaking teachers.

Understanding is accomplished through the use of pictures and gestures. SST teaching techniques include the Ton-Ton Leering, Picture Talk Show, Listening, Games(Karuta Tori, Bingo etc..), Intensive Listening and our other task and check activities. Without understanding, there can be no learning. However, all our activities, lead by Japanese speaking teachers (both national and international) are conducted in English. At Manebi we truly believe that English can only be learned through English. There is no need for translation, because of our unique use of pictures, gestures, and task and check activities.

Won't you come by and see how SST works in action? Join one of our seminars, or visit one of our schools for a personal classroom observation.

                     Rube Redfield(Professor of EFL Methodology)

        Hierarchical Fundamentals

    in Foreign Language Education

When we use languages, our brain works as a whole (all together).

1. LANGUAGE - What is it?

a. Language is whole and unique. (Language is alive and organic. So we can't divide it. (Buses move all together.  Rugby teams move all together.)

b. Natural language is always and only found in context.

c. Language consists of messages.

2. LEARNING LANGUAGES - How are languages learned?

a. Languages are learned through understanding messages.

b. We need to understand an abundance of messages (Massive         Comprehensible Input) in order to acquire a language.

c. Messages are learned best in context.

d. Languages are learned as a by-product of understanding             (unconsciously).

3. TEACHING - How do we teach (according to the fundamentals above) English with SST?

a. We teach English as a whole, moving quickly from word to sentence     to paragraph. (In our lessons we move from easy to hard.)

b. We always supply a context (run, I run to the toilet, episode).

c. Messages are made understandable through gestures, pictures, and     the  use of easy to understand (for Japanese learners) action verbs.

d. We make sure that messages are understood through extensive use of task and check activities.

e. We learn best when having fun. (Meaningful play leads to successful     learning). Use the all the power of the brain.
Songs and phonics don't activate all the brain, and they don't activate all the children.
Input that isn't understood can not become intake.
All of the intake is available for SLA
But all the intake doesn't become SLA.
SST; a national method, utilizes all the brain and reaches all the students.

  Task and Check
Task supplies comprehensionable input.
Check sees if input is understood.
Translation erases messages.
We learn English through understanding the messages.

     Unconscious rule/Conscious grammar
We use rules to speak.
Language is rule governed behavior.
But rules are subconscious.
Grammar describes languages correctly or incorrectly.
But we don’t use grammar to create language.

Turning Input into Output

   Repetition Reading aloud Shadowing

1. Pretending you are telling a story

 (物語を語るように…)

2. Gestures, loud voice with emotion

 (気持をこめ、身振り、大きな声で…)

3. Tell 32 stories(1~32)

 (初めから終わりまで…)

4. Follow the whole Stories, paying  attention

 (リエゾン、語順に注意してなぞる…)
